Chairman Jim Adams read and the board adopted a resolution noting that Matt Tatum began his career with Henry County on Sept. 16, 2002, advanced to director of public safety on June 1, 2015, led training partnerships with Patrick & Henry Community College, and helped found the Blue Ridge Fire and EMS Academy. The resolution extended the board's appreciation and wished Tatum a happy retirement effective July 31, 2025. Tatum addressed the board and thanked county staff and supervisors for the opportunity to serve.
The board also adopted a resolution commending the Ridgeway Ruritans Club on its 75 years of community service, noting volunteer hours and scholarship awards to local students.
In governance actions, the board unanimously appointed Michael Ward to the Roanoke River Basin Association for a one-year term expiring Aug. 31, 2026. The board also authorized the county attorney and county administrator "to execute any settlement agreements, release forms, and other documents to effectuate a settlement" with entities named in the motion (as presented at the meeting: Henry Sheen, Incorporated; General Injectables and Vaccines; Insource Incorporated; and related entities). The board's motion authorizing settlement execution passed 6-0.
