Brazosport ISD staff delivered a presentation on delinquent property taxes, reporting high collection rates and explaining the district's collection process. "The district doesn't have a delinquent property tax problem. You have collected over 98%, almost 99% of your annual taxes," the tax office presenter said, summarizing recent results. Staff presented a breakdown of collection activity by years and dollar ranges and explained the district's approach: outreach and reminders, lienholder contact, filing suit and, if necessary, setting property for sale. The presenter said the tax office prioritizes newer delinquencies because they are easier to collect. Key figures presented included a reported total delinquent base tax of about $2,300,000 across years, and a 2024 collection rate of about 98.78% (leaving roughly 1.22% or about $1,300,000 unpaid for that tax year). Historical data showed an earlier turnover of $1,600,000 in outstanding base taxes for a prior year, of which about $1,120,000 (about 69%) was collected during that fiscal year. Staff explained deferral provisions under the property-tax code: deferral applies to a resident homestead under certain circumstances, notably for taxpayers age 65 and older; while an account is in deferral status the district is not allowed to pursue collection actions but monitors the account and will take appropriate steps once deferral ends. Trustees asked clarifying questions about multi-year patterns and whether deferrals or closures affect percentages; staff explained the mix of deferrals, business closures and other factors affects year-to-year percentages. The tax office said the district budgets at a 95% collection rate and has exceeded that target in recent collections.
