Police highlight mock traffic stops for autistic residents, cadet and junior academies and senior picnic

Department staff told the Simsbury Police Commission about several recent outreach events: a regional mock traffic-stop program held at Westminster School for individuals with autism and their families; participation by local cadets and school resource officers in a multiday Cadet Academy; the department's 26th Junior Police Academy; and a senior picnic that drew roughly 163 attendees. Deputy Chief Davis and other staff described the mock traffic-stop event as a chance for individuals with autism and family caregivers to experience a car stop in a safe, comfortable setting; participants could repeat the exercise and staff said the department will provide individualized practice on request. "It was a huge success," staff said of the mock traffic-stop event and noted the department partners regionally with other towns and agencies. The Cadet Academy included "a couple hundred kids" this year from Connecticut and nearby states; the Rotary Club provided financial support for cadet participation, the chief said, and Ed LaMonte (Rotary treasurer) attended a presentation day. The Junior Police Academy was described as multi-agency in scope with instruction on life-safety skills, CPR and first aid; about 20 students attended this year. The senior picnic had about 163 seniors and roughly 13 to 14 officers in attendance; vendors and volunteers including Fitzgerald's provided food. Staff said the department is planning a car-show fundraiser on Oct. 11 and is trying to resume "Coffee with a Cop" events. No votes or formal directives were taken on outreach programs during the meeting.
