A former active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces soldier told the Board of Aldermen on Sept. 8 that municipalities should implement newly available options to expand property tax relief for Gold Star families and disabled veterans.
Matthew Archuleta, a Fourth District resident and former Green Beret, spoke in favor of recent legislation that “gave municipalities the opportunity to expand property tax relief for Gold Star families and disabled veterans.” He urged the board to be “the first to stand up and support relief to the surviving spouses of service members killed in the line of duty.”
Archuleta also asked aldermen to support a provision to exempt land for disabled veterans and “allowing inclusion of veterans who have a total disability rating based on individual unemployability.” The speaker said those veterans face “significant barriers to self sufficiency” and asked the city to act decisively to implement the expanded exemptions.
No vote or ordinance was taken at the Sept. 8 meeting; the request was delivered during public comment and the board did not announce a plan to introduce municipal implementing language at that time.
