Riverview council OKs five-year backflow inspection contract; staff says inspections cost residents nothing

Riverview — The Riverview City Council voted April 21 to award a five-year contract to Hydro Corp for residential and commercial cross-connection control backflow prevention inspections, with a contract limit not to exceed $256,592.27 over five years.
Council members questioned whether residential properties without irrigation systems would still be inspected and whether inspections would require entry into private homes. Jeff Webb, the city's director of public works, told the council there would be no cost to residents: “This is a company that's a turnkey company that ... takes care of all of this as far as handling the letters that go out to residents, the database, the report that's due at the end of the year.” He added the vendor would handle outreach and scheduling and that homeowners can sign up on the company's website.
Council member Webb asked whether properties without sprinkler systems would be inspected; staff answered that homes would be checked and inspectors may need entry into the home during the inspection. Councilors discussed residents’ availability and noted the company provides literature and a website to coordinate inspections.
The motion to approve the contract passed on a unanimous roll call vote.
