Council adopts ordinance updating rules for bicycles, skateboards and electric micromobility

The City Council on Aug. 11 adopted an amendment to the city code to update regulations for bicycles, skateboards, roller skates and newer electric micromobility devices to reflect changes in state law and downtown safety needs.
Amanda (city staff) explained the ordinance updates an early-1990s chapter to define and regulate electric bicycles and scooters, clarifies where devices are allowed and establishes lower speed limits and signage requirements in the downtown district. Amanda said the downtown area will include signs noting entry to the district and a reduced speed cap (staff referenced 10 miles per hour downtown and up to 15 mph elsewhere for certain electric devices).
Councilors voted to adopt the ordinance (Ordinance 875) by roll call/voice vote after a prior introduction at the previous meeting. Staff indicated signage and enforcement planning for downtown would follow adoption.
