Council approves $40,560 engineering contract to start US-12 downtown streetscape study

The City Council on Aug. 11 approved a $40,560 engineering contract with Spalding DeDecker to perform survey, traffic counts and preliminary engineering to begin a streetscape project along US-12 from Jefferson Street west to Clay Street.
City Manager Keith said the council in earlier budget discussions pledged potential funding in the roughly $2 million range for a streetscape project. Because much of the work lies in the MDOT right-of-way the city must coordinate with the Michigan Department of Transportation, and the preliminary engineering and traffic analysis are necessary first steps.
The consultant Spalding DeDecker was recommended after a solicitation for engineering services; staff said the firm’s proposal is more traffic-oriented than the city’s engineer of record and was the lower bid. Council approved Resolution 2579 to execute the survey and preliminary engineering contract.
