Council approves temporary Monroe Street closure for First Responders Appreciation Day on Oct. 28

The City Council on Aug. 11 approved a temporary closure of Monroe Street on Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. to accommodate the Branch County Association of Realtors’ fourth annual First Responders Appreciation Day.
Amber Moddert, president-elect of the Branch County Association of Realtors, said the event will run 11 a.m.–2 p.m.; the expanded closure time will allow for setup and cleanup and will provide space for vendors and seating. Moddert said credentialed first responders will receive a ticket for a free lunch; local restaurants and community sponsors including Century Bank and Trust, Consumers Credit Union and others will participate.
Council members moved and seconded approval; the motion passed by voice vote. Councilors and staff confirmed the organizers will coordinate details with the city and limit disruption to businesses. The event organizers told the council they hope to double participation from the more than 50 first responders honored last year.
