Council approves summer events, public art license and fireworks permit

The Coldwater City Council on June 9 approved a set of summer event and cultural items, including a street closure for Art After Hours, rotating public art license agreements, and authorization for the Fourth of July fireworks application.
City staff and event organizers asked the council to approve resolution 25-55 to temporarily close South Monroe for the Art After Hours event on June 27; the council approved the closure. Event staff said 12 artists will be paired with downtown businesses and a chalk artist will work on Monroe Street as part of the evening event.
Council also approved a public art license agreement establishing a one-year rotating display program. Staff said two pieces had been selected by the arts committee — a tortoise sculpture proposed for the library park portion of 4 Corners and a steel art piece proposed across from the Tibbetts building. “This is just a license agreement. It's not authorizing the specific art,” staff said, explaining the intent to rotate displays annually.
The council authorized staff to sign an application for a commercial pyrotechnic permit so the vendor Pyrotechnico can file with the state for the Fourth of July fireworks display; council approved resolution 25-63 for that purpose. The city manager confirmed the vendor is under contract and fundraising is complete.
In addition, staff reminded the public that Strawberry Fest will be held June 21 downtown and noted community center and arts activities scheduled in the coming weeks. The council approved the event-related resolutions and licenses and instructed staff to complete permitting and licensing steps.
