Council OKs deposit to reserve bid for multi-purpose floor resurfacing at recreation center

The Coldwater City Council on Monday approved Resolution 25-56 authorizing the city to move forward with a resurfacing project for the Robert W. Brown recreation-center multipurpose floor and to hold pricing by placing a deposit with the selected contractor.
Julie, recreation staff, explained the floor (installed in 2015) requires a repour of a two-millimeter polyurethane surfacing after about 10 years. The work will strengthen the floor, remove outdated texture that was originally installed for tennis use, and allow permanent pickleball lines and other requested changes. Julie said the project will require closing the recreation facility for four to six weeks; staff is targeting August 2026 for the work so the closure occurs during a manageable period.
Julie said the city solicited bids from four specialty-floor companies. Dynamic Sports Construction submitted the lowest bid but a Michigan-based firm that originally installed the floor bid a bit higher; staff recommended accepting the non-lowest bid because of perceived quality and local customer service. The council approved taking the second-lowest bid and authorizing a 50% deposit to lock pricing and dates.
Keith clarified the expenditure will be budgeted in fiscal year 2026–27; staff said the deposit will be accounted for in that fiscal year’s budget. Council approved Resolution 25-56 by voice vote; no public comment was recorded on the item.
Staff will finalize the contract with the selected vendor, schedule the closure, and program the fiscal-year budget item for adoption next year.
