DDA staff reported a string of downtown development and public-space updates during the May 28 meeting, including new businesses, property sales and public‑space improvements aimed at amplifying downtown activity.
Staff said Cafe de Caro opened at 61 West Chicago Street and specializes in Italian coffee and Venezuelan pastries. A rezoning at 50 North Hanset Street moved the parcel from a C2 downtown business district designation to an R3 residential designation; staff said that the change does not affect the DDA’s tax increment financing (TIF) capture boundary. Construction on a full-scale renovation at 22 West Pearl Street will create four apartment units, staff reported.
A special use permit was approved for 100 West Chicago Street to become a drive-through for Century Bank and Trust. Meanwhile 48 West Chicago Street, the previous Edward Jones office, is listed for sale; staff noted another office relocation (Nutrition Expression) and the corresponding availability of space.
Staff also reported a public‑space update: the DDA and city installed new banners on West and East Chicago streets and North Hanchett; the director said the banner color pattern alternates and that the project involved city council and city manager support for installation and upkeep.
No board action was required on these informational reports; staff said they will return with permit applications or agenda items if specific approvals are requested in the future.
