Children’s Museum seeks removable climbing structure; board told it’s a fixture, not a structural change

Shauna Greif, representing the Children’s Museum of Branch County, told the Deep Coldwater DDA on Feb. 26 that the museum plans an enhanced indoor climbing structure to replace or augment its current climber and better engage visiting children.
Greif said the estimated cost for the new climber is about $60,000 and that the exhibit would be bolted to the floor but removable. "The lease agreement says that the children's museum can install fixtures at their own discretion, whereas structural changes would need board approval," Greif said during the presentation. She and staff have concluded this climber would be treated as a fixture because it is removable and not permanently affixed to the building envelope.
Greif also described smaller facility updates the museum has completed at its own expense: the museum paid to add a drop ceiling to its multipurpose room, and it installed an additional vent in the women's bathroom to address cold conditions. She said the museum will cover the cost of adding a vent to the multipurpose room as well. Greif raised a separate operational concern: recent winged pests found on the second and third floors; she said eradication work is expected in March and asked the DDA to keep on top of scheduling for that treatment.
The DDA did not take formal action on the climber at the Feb. 26 meeting; staff noted that financing and formal funding requests related to the climbing structure would be discussed later in the agenda under the Match on Main application item.
