Coldwater reports surge in large-item pickups; Winterfest and recreation events scheduled

City Manager Keith Baker reported to the Coldwater City Council on Jan. 13 that Republic Services collected more than 4,400 large items in 2024 through the city contract — about 825 more items than in 2023, a roughly 23% increase.

Baker said the increased use indicates residents are taking advantage of the service to dispose of items without extra charge beyond their regular garbage subscription. "Over 4,400 large items were picked up by Republic... That's 8 25 more items than we had in 2023 or about a 23% increase," Baker said.

Baker also announced upcoming community programs and registration details: Winterfest will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Heritage Park and the Robert W. Brown Recreation Center, featuring wood carvings, children’s activities, horse-drawn wagon rides, sled-dog demonstrations, a Kiwanis cardboard sled race and an evening concert at Tibbits. The recreation department’s daddy–daughter dance is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8, with a family dance from 3 to 5 p.m. and the traditional father–daughter event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; registration is available through the recreation department and RecDesk on the city website. Registrations were also open for the Citizens Academy, a seven-week Thursday evening program starting in February.

Baker recognized staff accomplishments: Audrey Tapadin, Economic Development and Main Street director, completed a public management certificate from Indiana University, and Robert Hartbarger marked 30 years with the city.

Council received the report and approved it as part of the meeting record.
