During committee reports at the Sept. 9 meeting, commissioners discussed a recent city partnership with Coralville Nurseries that provided free street trees for planting in public planting strips.
Commissioner Heather said she received three trees and that neighbors obtained additional trees. "I got 3," Heather said. She described the application process as a simple email and photo submission and said one requested tree did not go to her because of likely utility conflicts or species availability; she added she followed up three times with the nursery. Another commissioner noted underground utilities can prevent tree placement in certain locations.
Commissioners said the program offers residents an easy way to add street trees and emphasized follow-up to ensure new trees are adopted and maintained by neighbors. No formal commission action was taken; the item was reported as an informational update.
Why it matters: Street trees contribute to urban canopy, shade sidewalks and reduce stormwater/runoff; the program represents a low-barrier municipal partnership to increase tree planting on public rights-of-way.
