Resident asks council to re-examine scheduling conflict between Harvest Night and Day of the Dead decorations

A longtime Soledad resident told the City Council on Sept. 3 that the timing of Day of the Dead decorations in early November will prevent the usual Harvest Night activities at the community center on Oct. 31 and asked whether the city could allow ‘‘day-of’’ decoration or otherwise accommodate the event. Vanessa Velasquez said Harvest Night typically draws about 500 people and provides free food and activities as an alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating.
Mayor Ana Velasquez noted public-comment rules prevent council deliberation on matters not on the agenda but directed staff to have the city manager follow up with the resident. Darlene (Deputy City Clerk) was asked to take contact information so staff can respond and, if requested by the resident, consider placing the matter on a future agenda for formal council discussion.
