Soledad Youth Council reports rebranding, recruitment and first meeting plans

Three newly seated members of the Soledad Youth Council reported progress on recruitment, rebranding and training at the Sept. 3 council meeting and said the group’s first official meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8 at the Soledad Community Center. Giovanni Bravo, Cindy Ocaraz and Marilyn Ramirez Pena described tabling at a high school club fair and production of flyers and a promotional video.
Giovanni Bravo said the council has completed a recruitment round in which about 35 students responded; the team plans to select roughly 15 commissioners to serve in the coming season. Bravo said the youth council has been trained on a newly implemented youth commissioner manual and is drafting youth-council guidelines that will set expectations for members.
Jessica (Parks & Recreation staff) told council the youth council is currently a city-run program under Parks & Recreation after efforts to partner with the school district did not result in a formal district response. She said the youth commissioners will still attend the school board’s second-Wednesday meetings to represent youth perspectives. Council members praised the group’s promotional materials and asked staff to circulate the finalized manual and guidelines to the council once they are available.
No formal council action was required; the item was a presentation and information update.
