Jennifer Oxy, development director at Sunflower Hill, briefed the commission on programs that combine affordable housing and day programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Oxy said Sunflower Hill operates a one-acre garden program on the former Hageman Ranch that provides hands-on vocational and life-skills training; in the reporting period the garden hosted weekly groups and donated produce to local nonprofits.
Oxy said Sunflower Hill donated more than 2,100 pounds of produce and 375 eggs since January and that program participants created over 380 bouquets for local care facilities. She described a summer camp that began this year (including participants aged 14 and up) and new community-service programming called Sun Squad. Oxy reported 101 activities from January to June with 267 participants overall and an average of 44 unique attendees per month.
Oxy also described Herbie Ranch, Sunflower Hill's first independent affordable housing community (31 units) opened in September 2020. She said many residents have caregivers and that some community members remain long-term; Sunflower Hill provides activities, vocational and social programs and hopes to serve participants across the Bay Area.
Oxy reported Sunflower Hill is developing additional projects: a GracePointe community in Dublin with 22 set-aside units and an 84-unit project in Dublin and a potential site in Lafayette. Commissioners asked about outreach and participant recruitment; Oxy said staffing increases and a new marketing specialist improved outreach and partnerships with local disability organizations and schools.
