The Gardena City Council on Aug. 26 approved the Wall of Fame selection committee's recommendations to induct five individuals at a Sept. 13 ceremony: Marcelino Almoraz (posthumous), Michael Seffel, Philip A. Johnson Sr., Susanna Waltz Medina and Woods Rayborn Woolwine Jr.
Staff said the Wall of Fame committee reviewed nomination packets and required criteria including a minimum of 25 years of community service, a petition with at least 25 signatures and supporting documentation. The committee's recommendation followed a meeting on Aug. 11 and each nominee earned at least an 83% committee vote; the ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 13 on the City Hall lawn.
Councilmember Francis and others asked whether nominees who were current or recent city employees had demonstrated community service separate from their paid city duties. Staff and the committee chair said nomination packets contained documentation showing the nominees met the service criteria and clarified that the Wall of Fame rules do not prohibit recognizing employees. Councilmembers asked where nomination forms and supporting documents were in the agenda packet; staff confirmed nominations and supporting files were included in the packet and are part of the record.
The council moved through individual votes on each nominee and approved all five; the clerk recorded approvals for each candidate. The council thanked nominees and committee members and reminded the public that the induction ceremony will be Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. on the City Hall lawn.
Decision vs. discussion: the committee's packet and criteria were discussed; the council then voted individually to approve each of the five inductees (decisions).
