Middle school students outline new schedules, MyCAP and Algebra access as part of district transformation

Dozens of middle-school students and principals addressed the Springfield School Committee Thursday to showcase student work and a district plan to overhaul middle-school schedules and postsecondary preparation.
Student representatives from South End, STEM, Zanetti Montessori and Renaissance presented short remarks and projects describing enrichment courses, new acceleration and intervention blocks, and college-and-career readiness activities. “The school year is off to a great start,” said Safi Mohammed, a seventh-grade student from South End Middle School. Students described new offerings such as creative writing enrichment, algebra for eighth graders, a college-and-career Friday block, mock trial, podcast clubs and extracurricular sports.
District leaders framed the presentations as part of the district’s middle-school transformation priority. Principals Andrea Williams and Yara Gonzales said they redesigned schedules to create daily “crew” or advisory time, build acceleration blocks for students who need enrichment, and preserve intervention opportunities. “Not every child needs intervention. Acceleration was our thought throughout the process,” Principal Williams said.
The district highlighted MyCAP, a digital college-and-career planning platform used to start individualized plans in sixth grade and carry them through grade 12. Officials said platform usage rose substantially last year after targeted focus. The district also announced broader access to Algebra I across several middle schools — including Conservatory, Renaissance, STEM and Zanetti — and a planned Saturday Success Academy to support students who need additional preparation.
Principals described summer college visits and project-based summer programming. School officials said the change in schedules gives each core subject more weekly instructional time while protecting opportunities for social-emotional learning, advisory, and extracurriculars; staff promised continued updates to the committee on outcomes and participation rates.
There was no formal committee vote; members and staff praised student presentations and asked for follow-up information about implementation, green-space access for recess/open-gym and measures used to track student outcomes.
The district said it will continue to roll out schedule changes, monitor MyCAP engagement, and coordinate professional development to support Algebra I expansion.
