District accepts $5 million Mass Clean Energy grant to add air conditioning to schools

The Springfield School Committee voted to accept a $5,000,000 grant from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s Green School Works program to support HVAC upgrades and accelerate air-conditioning installations in district buildings.
Superintendent Doctor Donnell and Chief Pat Roach described the award as part of a multi-year, sustainable plan to expand air conditioning and improve indoor air quality. The grant will fund upgrades at Alfred Glickman Elementary School, officials said, and is intended to be one component of a broader campaign to bring AC to every school over the coming years.
“We’re very happy to receive this $5,000,000 grant from the Mass Clean Energy Center,” said Mr. Beach, district staff, who noted the district recently completed AC installations in 10 schools using ESSER funds and has additional grant applications under way, including MSBA submissions. School officials said eight grant applications are pending and they expect to continue funding future installs with a mix of grant dollars.
Committee members asked for an updated list of which schools already have AC and the schedule for future work so families and staff can plan; Vice Chair Bruno Naylor asked staff to provide a clear roster of completed and upcoming projects.
The motion to accept the grant was made and seconded on the floor; the roll-call vote approved the acceptance unanimously among those present.
