School committee approves FY26 amended budget; district cites charter tuition deficit

The Springfield School Committee voted to approve an amended fiscal-year 2026 budget on Thursday, accepting a net reduction and several re-allocations the administration said were needed to align the district with the city and state final budgets.
Pat Roach, the district’s finance official, described the amendment as routine fall housekeeping that reconciles the committee’s earlier appropriation with the city and the state. “Overall, this is turning into a $1,172,229 decrease to the budget,” Roach told the committee, and he described specific adjustments: a roughly $1 million reduction in transportation, a $25,000 increase in family and community engagement, and an operational net decrease that includes higher charter and school-choice costs projected by the state.
Roach told members the governor had vetoed a charter-reimbursement line in the state budget, which produced a local exposure the district is carrying until state action might reverse the change. As a result, the district left a projected charter-tuition deficit of $2,465,394 in the amended budget while reducing the salary reserve by $1,706,099.
Committee members asked procedural and policy questions; there were no substantive program cuts described in the presentation. The amendment was moved by School Committee Member Barbara Gresham and seconded by Mister Collins; the roll-call vote passed by majority.
Officials said the district is monitoring possible state supplemental actions and that the finance office will continue to report on actual costs as revenue and state action evolve.
