Stayton wastewater operators, plant honored by regional association

The Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association's West Central section recognized Stayton wastewater staff on the City Council dais, naming Dennis Harris its 2025 Collections Operator of the Year, Dale McClasson its 2025 Treatment Operator of the Year, and awarding Stayton the section's Plant of the Year.

The awards matter because wastewater operations are a major city infrastructure expense and rely on trained operators; PNCWA officials said the honors highlight staff work that keeps water treatment systems functioning and compliant. Matt (PNCWA), who presented the awards, said the section covers seven Oregon counties and runs plant-profile tours that help operators exchange techniques and reduce costs.

At the presentation, Matt (PNCWA West Central president) recounted field examples of operators responding to service emergencies and hosting operator tours, then read nominations that emphasized technical skill, shift-to-shift flexibility and pride in facility maintenance. He praised Stayton's plant as "immaculate" and noted operators' willingness to lead tours and train peers as part of the reason for the plant award.

Councilors and staff also commended Stayton's team for the work they do, and Barry Buchanan, interim public works director, introduced the presenters and thanked the local team for its service.

No formal council action was required or taken on the recognition; the presentation was informational.

The city manager's office and public works staff plan to keep the council informed of operator training, plant tours and related capital or operating needs that may appear in future budget cycles.
