Contractor to grind high spot at Third and Ida; Stayton wastewater plant wins regional recognition

Public Works Director Barry Buchanan updated the council on road and wastewater matters on May 19, saying a contractor will correct a high spot at the Third and Ida crossing that has produced standing water, and he announced regional awards for the city’s wastewater plant and two plant operators.
“We have…reign over the last couple of days, and we still have a puddle. And that is not all bad news. It is, in actual fact, construction issue. The constructor has taken on board that they, in actual fact, have a small dam right at the f the crossing on the road,” Buchanan said. He told the council the contractor will “come in and grind that that small dam out” over the next 14 days and that the puddle seen earlier had been about “three quarters of an inch deep.”
Buchanan also reported that the city’s wastewater treatment plant received awards from PNWWA for best plant in the region and that two operators—Dennis and Dale—were recognized as best operators. He described factors considered in the award, including discharge records, flow handling, staffing and facility appearance.
Why it matters: the road correction is a short‑term construction fix to improve drainage and safety; the wastewater awards highlight operational performance and staff work at the treatment plant. Council thanked Buchanan and staff for the updates.
