The Stayton Police Department received its first award of accreditation from the Northwest Accreditation Alliance, the alliance's executive director told council.
The nut graf: Accreditation recognizes adherence to a set of professional standards intended to support accountability, transparency and best practices in law enforcement; the department met requirements in policy, procedure and documented proof of implementation.
Scott Hayes, executive director of the Northwest Accreditation Alliance, told the council that the program evaluates agencies against 110 law-enforcement standards drawn from best practices, Oregon Revised Statutes, Oregon Administrative Rules and city policy. "Accreditation goals are straightforward: support the continued improvement of law enforcement services, establish best practice through professional standards, establish agency accountability and transparency, and enhance management of operations," Hayes said.
Chief Johns thanked staff and outside contributors, including a contracted accreditation manager and records staff who gathered documentation and proofs. The alliance's accreditation is valid for three years before reaccreditation review.
Ending: Council received the accreditation presentation and recognized department staff for the accomplishment; no formal council action was required beyond the recognition.
