Strongsville City Council members on June 2 discussed e-bike safety and agreed to hold a Public Safety and Health Committee meeting before the next caucus and council meeting to consider education and any potential regulatory changes.
Councilmember Kozick said the Police Department had prepared a graphic explaining different classes of e-bikes and the legal requirements. "The Police Department was kind enough to put together a graphic, with some information regarding different classes of e bikes," Kozick said, and noted that the department had posted the material on social media.
Council members suggested developing educational options for families, including nonmandatory classes similar to Safety Town, CPR or babysitting courses. One member pointed out SROs (school resource officers) or D.A.R.E. officers could participate in outreach because they already interact with students in Strongsville schools; that suggestion would broaden access to private school students if parents signed up.
Councilmember Kozick said the safety committee meeting is set for Monday, June 16, to continue the discussion and determine whether any ordinance language will be needed. The council did not introduce or vote on any ordinance related to e-bikes at the June 2 meeting; the committee meeting is listed as the next step for additional study and possible recommendations.
