Lorain design review board approves demolition of Elks Lodge building at West Sixth Street

The City of Lorain Design Review Board on April 28 approved a motion to permit demolition of a building owned by the Lorain Elks Lodge on West Sixth Street.
The vote followed a brief presentation from an Elks representative who told the board the building has been abated of asbestos and a contractor is ready to begin demolition once the board’s approval is recorded. “The building has been abated of all asbestos. So it’s ready to be torn down,” said Doug Hasso, an Elks representative.
Board members and staff also noted an address discrepancy between the application and the property records; the application listed 206 West Sixth Street while speakers also referred to 209 West Sixth Street. The board said it would correct the application record and reiterated that any future work on the site’s parking lot must return to both the Planning Board and the Design Review Board for review.
The board chair called for a motion to approve the demolition. A motion was made and seconded; the roll call was not read aloud on the record and the only verbal response recorded during the vote was “Aye.” The chair then said, “Motion carries.” The meeting record does not include a named vote tally.
No public speakers addressed the item; the board secretary noted two people were in the audience. The board moved on to other business after the vote.
