Two residents of Nativity Manor told Lorain City Council on Monday that poor street lighting is creating safety hazards for seniors and others who live near 420 West 15th Street.
"It is terrible around there," said Barbara Daniels, who identified her address in public comment and described seniors who cannot see well in the dark. "We have senior citizens on their walkers and can't even sit out there because it's a... it is terrible."
Marjorie Centro, who said she cares for her 90-year-old mother at the same address, described repeated vandalism to her vehicle and said darkness prevents cameras and police from identifying perpetrators. "My car has been vandalized 3 times in that area... we had to pay a lot of money to repair my glass," she said, asking the council for additional lighting and security.
No formal city action was taken during the meeting; the remarks were part of the public-comment period. Council member Kenton told residents she had met with them and said she had emailed Ohio Edison about the poor lighting and the park area near the building. "More lights mean less crime," Kenton said, and she asked staff to pursue options to improve illumination in the area.
Council members later reiterated concern about late-night street racing and speeding near the complex and flagged the issue for follow-up with service and public-safety departments.
