On March 11, 2025, the Lorain Civil Service Commission approved the appointment of Jose Martinez to the position of Laborer 1 in the Parks Division of the Lorain Public Property Department.
The appointment came on a motion from a commission member and a second; the motion passed unanimously. The request was submitted by the Safety-Service Director and presented under personnel correspondence at the March 11 meeting.
Laurie, a staff member involved in the hiring process, said, "After advertising for the position, we had a panel of 3 people interview all the applicants, and Mr. Martinez rose to the top of them because of his background. He had a lot of construction background, which will help immensely in the parks for all the different buildings and, like, bleachers and stuff we work on." Laurie added that Martinez had grass-cutting experience and that the panel’s recommendation was “pretty unanimous.”
Commissioners asked about who served on the interview panel; Laurie named Mike Thomas and Melinda Streic in addition to herself. The motion to appoint Martinez referenced the hiring authority cited in the meeting record as "Ohio administrative code 1231Dash17Dash01C46." The Commission voted to approve the appointment during the same agenda item.
The record does not show Martinez speaking at the meeting. The appointment is recorded as an approved personnel action; the Commission did not attach further conditions or a probationary period on the public record during the meeting.
