Lorain City Council voted to approve a settlement agreement in the federal case Roman v. City of Lorain, U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, case no. 2:23-cv-02348. The ordinance approving the settlement passed unanimously.
Council discussion noted the settlement amount was $250,000; a council member who chairs the finance and claims committee said the city's insurance coverage would limit direct city exposure because the city deductible is $50,000. "To say, I obviously I'm still not happy about it... we're up for $250,000, but, RPD does good work," Councilmember Nutt said, adding that administration and police leadership had reviewed the matter and taken actions in response to the underlying issues.
The ordinance authorizes the settlement as presented in the agreement attached to the council packet. The measure passed without recorded dissent and will be implemented consistent with the settlement terms and the city's insurance arrangements.
