Broadway Commons project draws mixed written comments and public opposition at council meeting

Lorain City Council received multiple pieces of correspondence and public comment on the proposed Broadway Commons permanent supportive housing project and related funding partners, including Eden Housing and Broadway Commons Inc. The letters and comments reflected both support and opposition from community groups and residents.

Council received letters from Broadway Commons Inc. and Eden Housing, a resubmitted support letter from Ryan Aroney, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Lorain County, and written support from Lillian Green and Eileen Torres. During the meeting a council member moved to endorse Councilwoman Springowski's letter opposing the Broadway Commons project; that motion was defeated after a roll-call count produced six dissenting votes. The minutes record the dissenting votes as cast by Councilmembers Duvall, Compton, Nutt, Mee, Arroyo and Spellacy.

Several residents spoke during the public-comment period. Joanne Salina said she had opposed Broadway Commons since its planning commission review and questioned whether residents' concerns had been considered. Mindy Schauber and others urged the council to prioritize local assets and alternatives and questioned whether the proposed development would address the city's needs.
