MURRAY, Utah —1 Aug. 26 —1 The Murray City Council approved a text amendment to permit limited encroachments of open-sided porches, awnings and roof canopies into residential setback areas, subject to dimensional and construction limits.
Planning staff presented the amendment, which allows a roof or canopy that is open on three sides to encroach into setback areas so long as it does not exceed one story in height and the canopy span is no greater than half the width of the main dwelling. Supporting columns must rest on individual pad footings or an equivalent foundation. The amendment prohibits encroachments that would place the covered structure closer than 20 feet to a front-yard property line or closer than 10 feet to a rear-yard property line.
Staff said the change responds to frequent homeowner requests for covered outdoor spaces such as porches, shades and awnings without creating fully enclosed additions that would otherwise trigger full setback requirements. The planning commission held a public hearing and recommended approval; the council adopted the change by motion and voice vote.
No substantive neighborhood objections were recorded at the meeting. Staff will publish the revised ordinance language and update building-permit checklists to reflect the encroachment standards.
