New Britain district reports drop in kindergarten registration; cause unclear

The Consolidated School District of New Britain reported a dip in kindergarten registrations at the Sept. 2 Board of Education meeting and said staff will seek regional data to determine whether the trend is local or wider.

"As I've noted to the board in my weekly email, we are seeing a drop in kindergarten registration," the superintendent said. He said he planned a meeting with Hartford County counterparts to learn whether neighboring districts have seen similar declines.

Board members asked whether a recent change in the kindergarten entry-age rules was responsible. District staff said they do not believe the age change explains the full decline and that the ability to request early entry was reduced this year. The superintendent said the district uses local and partner preschool assessment rubrics to judge early-entry readiness and will review data to ensure consistent standards across partners.

At the meeting the superintendent also emphasized registration policies: "We do not check immigration status for anybody who's registering to attend school. ... The only requirements are that you can prove that you live in the city of New Britain," he said, citing Connecticut law and district practice.
