County Attorney Wilmot summarized the background: the Commonwealth and many local governments have entered nationwide settlements with opioid manufacturers and distributors; the board must opt in to receive funds from each settlement. The current opt-in action covers a group of manufacturers and distributors named in the national settlement documentation; the funds must be used for a limited set of opioid-abatement activities (prevention, treatment, recovery and related programs).
Why it matters: opt-in preserves the county’s ability to access settlement funds that can be used for opioid-related public-health programs. Staff who have been administering earlier settlement dollars will continue to manage program allocations and compliance.
Action taken: the board adopted the opt-in resolution on the consent agenda. County staff will receive and manage the funds consistent with state and settlement allocation rules.
