Gloucester supervisors approve golf-cart ordinance for Piney Point neighborhood

The Gloucester County Board of Supervisors voted 7–0 on Aug. 5 to adopt an ordinance permitting regulated golf-cart use in the Piney Point subdivision, following a staff presentation and public comment urging the change.

The vote came after Ryan Lewis, director of engineering services, presented a draft ordinance prepared by the county attorney and confirmed that a public notice had been issued. "It's a beautiful neighborhood," Lewis said during his remarks, urging the board to proceed.

Residents told the board Piney Point, a low-traffic neighborhood on the Piankatank River, has many older and mobility‑limited residents who would benefit from golf‑cart access. "This golf cart ordinance would be a real boon for our quiet little community," Piney Point resident Susan Nottingham told supervisors during public comment, describing the area as largely senior and ambulatory‑challenged.

Supervisors moved and seconded the ordinance after the presentation; the roll call recorded unanimous support. Doctor Ward, Mister Hudson, Mister Smith, Mister Krysko, Mister Bezani, Mister Nikosha and others voted in favor; the motion carried.

The ordinance will allow Piney Point residents to operate permitted golf carts on designated local roads under the county’s terms spelled out in the draft ordinance and subject to the county attorney's final review and publicity requirements. Lewis advised that the county had provided public notice as part of the ordinance process.

The board did not amend the draft ordinance on the floor; staff will proceed with the administrative steps needed for implementation, including public notification and enforcement details.

Supervisors and staff indicated they will monitor operations and respond to any neighbor concerns after the ordinance takes effect.
