Clay Mitchell, who identified himself as representing the Veterans of Foreign Wars post, used the public-comment period to announce several upcoming fundraising events and to say he plans to return to the commissioners with more detail about “the woes of the VFW” next week.
Mitchell told the board the post is selling ribs for pickup on Sept. 6 at $25 a slab, is organizing a Jeep run on Sept. 13 and a golf scramble on Sept. 20 at the county country club, and expects to hold a large bingo event in October. "We're making ribs on the barbecue to be picked up on ... September 6 on $25 a slab," Mitchell said during his remarks. He said he would provide more information to the board at a later meeting about the post’s situation.
Mitchell did not request formal county action during his comments; his appearance was part of the public-comment agenda. Commissioners acknowledged his remarks but did not record a formal response or directive in the meeting minutes.
The announcements provide dates and fundraising opportunities for residents; Mitchell indicated he will return to give a fuller briefing about the post’s challenges.
