Board creates part-time legal secretary in district attorney’s office using existing levy allocation

The Chippewa County Board approved Resolution 30-25 on Aug. 12 to create a part-time legal secretary position in the district attorney's office, using levy dollars the administration said were already included in the office’s budget.
Administration staff told the board the county is working toward a roughly 1-to-1 ratio of legal secretaries to district attorneys and that money was put in the prior year’s budget but the position had not been authorized. The resolution directs creation of a part-time position to provide administrative support for the district attorney and assistant district attorneys; the administration said this does not represent a new levy increase because funds were already set aside.
Supervisor Schubert expressed concern about raising levies generally but did not block the motion; the resolution passed 16–2. The administration said the appointment brings the DA office closer to the staffing ratio desired for timely case processing and administrative support.
The board approved the change and staff will include the position in the 2026 budget as described in the resolution.
