The Caribou City Council on Aug. 25 awarded the contract to demolish 49 Herschel Street to Tiptoe Trucking for $34,950.
City staff said County Environmental has started an asbestos-containing materials survey at the structure; if asbestos-containing materials are found they will be abated prior to demolition. The contractor, Louis Thibodeau, told the council he would begin interior clearing (removing salvageable items and materials) and that demolition work would proceed once environmental clearances are complete. Staff said letters had been sent to abutting property owners to keep them informed because the building sits close to neighboring structures.
Councilors recorded their appreciation for the updated, clarified bid documentation, which staff had asked the low bidder to supply after concern arose that the low bid was significantly lower than competing bids. Staff reiterated that when interior work begins the contractor is expected to finish the job promptly to avoid leaving a partial demolition as an eyesore.
