At the start of the Alisal Union School District board meeting, Dr. Fernandez presented a spotlight on Nancy's Project and its partnership with the district's migrant education program.
"Nancy's Project is a local nonprofit founded in 1971 and has long served the Salinas Valley farmworker community," Dr. Fernandez said. She described how the partnership expanded in 2024 to include grocery carts for families, professional outfits for an award-winning sixth-grade migrant speech-and-debate team, and a summer distribution that provided a free pair of shoes to every TK through sixth-grade student at Frank Paul and BRB. "Families receive appointment tickets in advance and were welcomed into a fully stocked cafeteria where students shop for shoes alongside their parents, supported by 50 dedicated volunteers. It was a day filled with joy and gratitude," she said.
Dr. Fernandez singled out Alexis Diaz Infante, a community-school coordinator, and clerical teams at both schools and the district's migrant-education department for their role in organizing the events. The spotlight noted Nancy's Project began partnering with the district's migrant education program in 2024 and emphasized ongoing volunteer support and resource distributions. No district expenditure or policy decision was associated with the spotlight; it was offered as an informational recognition item.
