Board approves Chromebook replacements and Johnson Controls HVAC system upgrade

The board approved two service-and-contract items related to technology and facilities: a procurement to replace classroom Chromebooks and a systems upgrade with Johnson Controls to consolidate and modernize the district’s HVAC control servers and network devices.
Jacob Meyer, who presented the Chromebook item, said the order was intended to replace devices in classrooms and that the district planned to keep roughly 500 devices on hand for technicians and storage. “I think this order was for 580,” Meyer said, while also noting he did not have the exact figure at the dais.
On the HVAC item, staff explained the district’s Johnson Controls installation had accumulated components that are at end of life and that two separate servers were in use because older network engines limited some parts of the system to older software. The proposal would consolidate the Johnson Controls environment onto a single virtual server, update the network engines, and reduce cybersecurity exposure by enabling current security updates. Presenting staff estimated the upgrade should keep the system current for roughly four to five years.
Why it matters: district staff said consolidating the HVAC controls will simplify system management and reduce cybersecurity risk from unsupported devices. Trustees also noted potential energy- and cost-savings from a modernized, properly managed HVAC control system.
What the board did: after staff presentations, a board member moved and the board approved both service-contract items by voice vote.
