The Alisal Union School District Board of Trustees approved two memoranda of understanding (MOUs) concerning substitute teachers and compensation during the regular meeting.
Katie Bassler, who identified herself as representing substitute teachers across multiple Salinas-area districts, told the board the agreements followed collaboration with district staff. "We came to an agreement of how the substitutes can still earn sick leave, but it not be a burden on staff to keep track," she said. Bassler said the sick-leave change means substitutes "will no longer be able to carry sick leave over from year to year," and that the agreement includes a "2% raise on their daily rate, which matches what the other units received."
Trustees voted by roll call to approve the MOUs; the meeting record shows each vote on the related items passed 3-0 with Trustees Beatriz Perez and Roberto Ocampo absent. The MOUs were listed on the agenda as amendments to Article 11 (substitute sick leave) and Article 10 (compensation) of collective agreements.
The district and union described the MOUs as addressing record-keeping burdens and aligning substitute pay with other bargaining units. The meeting record did not include details about the new daily-rate amounts or the implementation timetable. No legal citations or budget line items were discussed in the public votes recorded at the meeting.
