Council approves downtown street closure and fee waiver for Chamber banquet

The Elgin City Council approved a resolution authorizing street closures and waiving associated fees for the Elgin Chamber of Commerce awards banquet planned for Saturday, Sept. 27, in downtown Elgin. Chamber representatives described plans to close Central Avenue between Main Street and Avenue C, set up a stage near Main Street, use local vendors and caterers, and invite the public to purchase tickets at the door.

City staff said the fee waiver calculated for public-works and police support was $1,965 and that staff and the police department would coordinate security and logistics at a planning meeting. The chamber told the council the event would emphasize local businesses and vendors and would not be a fundraiser; proceeds are intended to support the chamber—s member-focused programming.
