Councilman Williams asked whether operating short-term rentals (commonly called Airbnb) is currently prohibited under city ordinance. An unidentified city staff member replied that the city does not have an existing short-term-rental framework and that allowing rentals under 30 days would require an ordinance change and coordination with the state for proper taxation. The staff member said the city is reviewing zoning ordinances (about 95 percent complete) and that any adoption of short-term-rental rules would likely proceed through a workshop and ordinance change.
Councilman Williams and other council members also raised recurring concerns about mattresses left in alleys and along highways. Williams described instances where mattresses have blown into traffic and said the city has been billed for disposal of mattresses taken to the landfill. A staff commenter said a letter or note had been sent that evening with an update and that the city would investigate charges that appeared on recent bills.
Council members expressed interest in establishing a clearer city approach to mattress collection and disposal to deter improper dumping. No formal motion or ordinance was proposed or adopted at the meeting; council members requested staff follow up and suggested a workshop or future agenda item to address both short-term rentals and mattress-disposal procedures.
