Board recognizes Gig Harbor–Key Peninsula Suicide Prevention Coalition for community partnership

Peninsula School District counselors and board members honored the Gig Harbor–Key Peninsula Suicide Prevention Coalition for more than a decade of training and student support work. Coalition president Thelma Brown accepted a formal certificate of appreciation.
The Peninsula School District Board of Directors on Aug. 19 formally recognized the Gig Harbor–Key Peninsula Suicide Prevention Coalition for its ongoing partnership with district staff and student programs.
Lead counselor Becky Maffei introduced members of the coalition and described the group’s history. “The Gig Harbor Key Peninsula Suicide Prevention Coalition was formed in 2012 … out of a coalition of some school district folks, lots of community people from a broad range of the community,” Maffei said, and she credited the group with organizing trainings, student groups and community events that support suicide awareness and prevention.
Coalition President Thelma Brown accepted a certificate on behalf of the organization and thanked the board for the recognition. Brown noted the coalition’s role training students in Youth Mental Health First Aid and said volunteers help provide a network for identifying and supporting students in distress.
Board members and attendees praised the coalition’s long‑term commitment to students and community members during brief comments following the presentation.
