Trustee raises concerns about WHSAA reclassification and travel impacts for small schools

At the Sept. 3 work session, a trustee warned that the Wyoming High School Activities Association's recent reclassification has produced uneven groupings that could affect travel and competition for nearby schools.
The trustee said 2A now includes 11 teams with a 1.9 multiplier between the smallest and largest schools in the class; 4A contains 14 schools with a 2.84 multiplier; 3A contains 16 schools with a 3.3 multiplier; and 1A has 29 schools with roughly a fourfold multiplier. The trustee called the current cut lines a "flawed experiment" after the first two-year cycle, noting that several schools dropped classifications and that regional proposals and contests over classification will be active at upcoming WHSAA regional meetings.
Trustees were encouraged to raise proposals before the Sept. 10 regional meetings; the trustee said adjustments could shift nearby competitors and reduce travel burdens for some schools.
No formal district position was adopted at the work session.
