Council approves MOU letting district fund up to $3/hour extra pay for school resource officer

The Verona Common Council on Aug. 25 approved a memorandum of understanding with the Wisconsin Professional Police Association (WPPA) and the Verona Area School District that allows the district to provide up to $3 per hour to the city for a school resource officer (SRO).
Under the agreement, if the district pays the city, the city may provide the SRO additional compensation of up to $3 per hour for hours worked as an SRO on dates designated by the chief of police. The MOU expires on Dec. 31, 2025, and will not renew unless the parties agree in writing.
Alderperson Helmke moved approval and Alderperson Weiss seconded. Council members discussed the arrangement’s history and mechanics. The council’s police chief explained that the supplemental pay reflects earlier practice designed to encourage officers to take SRO assignments; the officer position had been vacant for several years, the chief said. Council members clarified that the city is not liable to make any supplemental payment if it does not receive the full amount from the district; the city acts as a pass-through.
