Alder announces B Smart gun-safety outreach and reminds public about free gun locks

Alder Helmke announced at the start of the Sept. 8 meeting that the council plans to publish information about the B Smart gun-safety program on the city website and that the police department is interested in promoting the effort.
Helmke connected the announcement to a recent school shooting in Minnesota and said local and school-district efforts can help families learn how to store firearms safely. "Given the school shooting in Minnesota, sending my condolences to those families... I think it's really important that we, as a local municipality, are doing what we can do in our power, to create, education around how to store guns safely," Helmke said.
Helmke reminded residents that the police department distributes free gun locks and encouraged families to use available resources and to discuss safe storage practices for play dates and household safety. The announcement was presented as a council member initiative and informational outreach; no ordinance or funding request was made.
