The Board of Education of Lyons Township High School District 204 on Aug. 18 authorized an emergency repair to a condensate tank at the South Campus HVAC system, to be completed before the heating season.
Brian Stasiak explained the district’s $50,000 administrative threshold that allows staff to proceed with building repairs under that amount without expanding building footprint; the condensate-tank repair was described as an emergency because of the impending heating season. Stasiak said the district estimated approximately $80,000 for the repair and that one returned quote was about $96,000; staff also said they are still soliciting additional quotes. He told the board some funds for building repairs were already budgeted at the building level and that the planned repair would not materially lower the district fund balance.
Board member questions focused on the effect on the fund balance and whether multiple quotes were comparable. Stasiak said the district had budgeted for such repairs and would continue to collect quotes; Brad Drake, buildings and grounds director, was referenced as working on estimates. The board approved the emergency authorization by roll call.
The district did not give a final contract award amount at the meeting; administrators said they would continue to seek additional bids and proceed with repair work under the emergency authorization.
