The Benicia Unified School District board approved its consent calendar and a series of action items Sept. 4, including California School Board Association (CSBA) policy updates and several memoranda of understanding (MOUs) and personnel-related requests.
The board approved CSBA board policy updates (June 2025 version plus additions) as presented. Trustees then approved a variable-term waiver request for adapted physical education (APE) that the district will submit to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing; the waiver relates to Scott Schwartz serving as the point adaptive PE teacher while completing credentialing coursework.
The board ratified an MOU with Grand Canyon University College of Nursing and Healthcare Professions to permit master of public health graduate students to complete practicums in district elementary schools and provide health lessons. Trustees also approved an MOU with the Benicia Teachers Association (BTA) to fund drumline and color guard stipends using Proposition 28 allocations and an MOU with BTA for LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) training stipends for teachers who complete the professional development.
The board approved an MOU with the Classified School Employees Association (CSEA) chapter 1096 to provide payment to CSEA employees who worked on Juneteenth in 2021 and 2022, before Juneteenth was incorporated into the bargaining agreement; the agreement covers pay at the rate in effect for those days. Several resolutions declaring obsolete property (CPR manuals, Spanish books from Venetia High, obsolete items from Joe Henderson Elementary and Benicia High School) were adopted on the consent calendar by roll call votes.
All votes on these items passed by voice vote or roll call as recorded; no public dissent was recorded during those agenda items.
