Council schedules public hearing on demolition of former Firestone headquarters
The Akron City Council Planning Committee referred an ordinance that would authorize a certificate of appropriateness to demolish the former Firestone headquarters, 1200 Firestone Parkway, to a public hearing set for Thursday, Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
The referral places the demolition request on a public record and schedules the council’s opportunity to hear comment before the council considers final action.
Chair Fusco asked the clerk to read the item into the record. The clerk read: "Item number 7 is an ordinance authorizing a certificate of appropriateness to demolish the former Firestone headquarters at 1200 Firestone Parkway and declaring an emergency." Fusco then said he would refer the ordinance for a public hearing on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
No substantive debate about the merits of demolition or alternatives was recorded in the transcript; the committee’s action was to schedule the public hearing. The ordinance language and the emergency declaration were read into the record; no vote on final adoption occurred at this meeting.
