Roundlake presenters outline how to write an effective college personal statement

Señora Nunan, college and career counselor at Roundlake High School, opened a session titled "Estructura de Ensayos de Cifrada" with advice for students writing college personal statements, saying, "Escribir un ensayo personal impactante no es para impresionar a los oficiales de admisión, sino para revelar tu auténtico yo a través de una historia significativa de crecimiento y autodescubrimiento."

The presenters emphasized that a personal statement should show who a student is beyond grades and test scores. The presenters outlined concrete guidance students can use when drafting and revising their statements: choose a topic that resonates with your experience; select stories that reveal depth of character; show personal growth and self-reflection; use vivid, specific details rather than abstract claims; avoid repeating the resume; prefer strong verbs and concise language; and connect the ending to the beginning for a satisfying narrative arc. Nunan advised, "Te recomiendo lo siguiente para guiar tu escritura," and later reinforced revision practices: "Revisa, revisa y vuelve a revisar. Los errores de ortografía y gramática pueden impactar el mensaje y la historia... asegúrate de pedirle a alguien más que lea tu ensayo para garantizar que se corrijan los errores."

Presenters also advised tone and audience: write in a voice that reflects a high school senior's natural language rather than attempting to sound overly sophisticated. They warned against clichés and reiterating accomplishments listed elsewhere in the application. A final practical tip was to "lleva tu ensayo a un círculo completo" by linking the ending back to the introduction.

The session closed with a reminder about local supports: "Si necesitas apoyo con tu ensayo universitario, asegúrate de comunicarte con tus consejeros y profesores de la preparatoria Roundlake," Marcus said. The session focused on drafting and revision advice rather than admissions outcomes or policy requirements.
